Sommi is a wine recommendation app. This policy explains what information the app handles, where it goes, and the choices you have. We've kept it short and plain because, by design, Sommi keeps almost everything on your device.
The short version: The personal details you enter — your email, name, date of birth, and wine preferences — along with your wine history and ratings, are stored only on your phone; we don't upload them to our servers. When you ask for a wine recommendation, the dish and wine-list information you provide is sent to our AI provider to generate that recommendation, without any of your identifying details attached — this includes your flavor preference, and your style preference on "Surprise me" requests. We do not store your photos.
Sommi ("we," "us," "our") provides a mobile application that recommends wines to pair with food or to match your preferences. You can reach us at [email protected].
When you set up Sommi, the app asks for some information to personalize your experience. This information is stored locally on your device only and is not transmitted to our servers. Your email, name, and date of birth are never shared with anyone. Your wine preferences may be shared in a limited way, described below.
Because this information lives only on your device, deleting the app removes it.
As you use the app, Sommi also stores information about the wines you've selected from recommendations — also locally on your device only:
Like the setup information above, this stays on your device only — it is not synced to our servers or backed up anywhere. Deleting the app removes it, and you can also clear it directly from within Settings.
When you request a wine recommendation, Sommi sends the following to our third-party AI provider, Anthropic, which generates the recommendation:
No identity is attached. We do not send your name, email, date of birth, or any identifier to Anthropic. The request contains only the dish and wine information needed to produce a recommendation.
Anthropic processes this information to return a recommendation and handles it under its own terms. You can learn more about Anthropic's practices at anthropic.com/legal/privacy.
To help prevent abuse of our systems, our backend server briefly logs the IP address associated with each recommendation or photo-extraction request, solely to limit how many requests can be made in a short period of time. This is standard technical security logging — it is not linked to your name, email, or any other identifying information, and it is not used to track your activity.
Sommi lets you share a photo of a wine list — either by taking a new photo with your camera or by choosing an existing one from your photo library — so the app can read the wines on it. When you do this:
Sommi reads from a database of restaurants and their wine lists to make recommendations. This database contains publicly available wine and restaurant information. It does not contain any personal information about you, and the app does not write your personal information to it.
To be clear about what Sommi does not do:
| Information | Where it's stored | Shared with |
|---|---|---|
| Email, name, date of birth | Your device only | No one |
| Wine preferences | Your device only | Anthropic (AI) — flavor always, style only on "Surprise me" requests, without identity |
| Wine history, ratings & tasting notes | Your device only | No one |
| Dish & preference inputs (per request) | Not stored | Anthropic (AI), without identity |
| Wine-list photos (camera or library) | Deleted after processing | Anthropic (AI), during processing only |
| IP address (per request) | Brief server log, for rate-limiting | Not shared externally |
| Location, device identifiers for tracking, analytics | Not collected | — |
Sommi references alcohol and is intended for users who meet the legal age to view such content in their location. We ask for your date of birth during setup to confirm this. Sommi is not directed at children.
Sommi is not intended for anyone under the age required to use an alcohol-related app in their region, and we do not knowingly collect information from such individuals.
We may update this policy as Sommi grows and adds features. When we do, we'll revise the "last updated" date above. Significant changes — for example, if a future version of Sommi introduces accounts or friend connections — will be reflected here before those features collect new information.
